Marketing Architecture Institute Opens CMAO Founding Pathway for Senior Marketing Leaders

A time-limited provision allows senior marketing leaders with ten or more years of enterprise marketing leadership experience to pursue CMAO without first holding CMAA or CMA, subject to Executive Equivalency Portfolio review; the standard CMAO assessment is unchanged.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASESeptember 29, 2026

LEHI, Utah —

The Marketing Architecture Institute (MAI) today announced the opening of the CMAO Founding Pathway, a time-limited provision that allows senior marketing leaders to pursue the Certified Marketing Architecture Officer (CMAO) credential without first holding the Certified Marketing Architecture Associate (CMAA) or Certified Marketing Architect (CMA) credentials that the standard pathway requires.

The CMAO is the apex credential in MAI's practitioner ladder, certifying executive-level competency in governing Marketing Architecture practice across an enterprise. The standard route to CMAO runs through CMAA and CMA, a sequential progression designed to ensure that governance-level certification is built on demonstrated practitioner competency. That design is sound, and it remains unchanged.

The Founding Pathway exists because of a specific condition of MAI's founding period: no population of practitioners has had time to move through the full credential ladder naturally, because those credentials are new. Senior marketing leaders who have spent a decade or more governing enterprise marketing functions at the level the CMAO describes have done so without a credential ladder that did not yet exist. The Founding Pathway is a bridge for those practitioners, not a permanent alternative route.

Candidates who pursue the Founding Pathway must submit an Executive Equivalency Portfolio, reviewed by the Founding Practitioner Review Panel, that documents their enterprise marketing leadership experience in lieu of the standard CMA prerequisite. Candidates whose Portfolio is approved proceed to the full standard CMAO assessment: a 120-item written examination, an Executive Leadership Portfolio, and a Senior Panel Review. None of those components is modified or waived for Founding Pathway candidates.

Eligibility for the Founding Pathway requires a minimum of ten years of marketing-specific senior leadership experience at enterprise scale or in a CMO-adjacent role. Adjacent governance or architecture experience from outside marketing does not qualify. The pathway is open to marketing leaders only.

The pathway closes once MAI has established a sufficient pool of verified CMAO endorsers, as determined by the Governing Board, or after three years from launch, whichever comes first, with a possible one-year extension. Once it closes, the standard prerequisite structure is the only route to the credential.

"The Founding Pathway is not a shortcut and it is not a concession. It is a recognition that the practitioners who should be among the first to hold this credential have been doing the work for years without a credential that existed to validate it," said Bray Brockbank, founder of the Marketing Architecture Institute. "We built the standard pathway the way we did because governance should be built on practice. The Founding Pathway preserves that principle. It changes when the prerequisite is satisfied, not what the assessment requires."
