Where Do I Start?
If you're new to Marketing Architecture or unsure which MAI credential is right for you, this page is for you.
What a Marketing Architecture credential actually means
MAI credentials assess and certify a specific level of capability, from analyzing and diagnosing marketing systems, to designing and governing them, to leading them at enterprise scale. They're built on the MABOK, the Marketing Architecture Body of Knowledge, which is the discipline's shared foundation. Each credential sits at a different point on that scale, so the right one for you depends on where your experience and goals actually sit, not just on ambition.
Start free
Before committing to anything, take the Introduction to Marketing Architecture course. It's free, gives you a working sense of the discipline, and takes the guesswork out of whether this is the right direction for you.

New to marketing entirely, or exploring a career shift
Start with the free introductory course, then the MAFC (Marketing Architecture Foundations Certificate). No prior credential or experience required for either. Free course, then MAFC →

You may be able to skip the MAFC through a CMAA Eligibility Review. Start at the CMAA page to check the criteria. CMAA, or eligibility review →
Senior practitioner already designing and governing marketing systems, not just executing them
The CMA (Certified Marketing Architect) is built for this level of work. It assumes practitioner experience the CMAA already assessed. CMA →
Executive or enterprise leader responsible for marketing architecture across a whole organization
CMAO (Certified Marketing Architecture Officer) is built for that scope, but it requires a current CMA first. If you don't hold one yet, that's your actual starting point. CMAO, requires CMA →
Board member, oversight role, or governance function — not a practitioner
CMGB (Certified Marketing Governance Board) sits outside the practitioner ladder. It has no prior MAI credential prerequisite, but it does require active MAI membership at the time of application and senior governance, board, audit, or oversight experience, verified after passing the exam. CMGB →
Once you know where you fit, the full path, prerequisites, exams, and fees for each credential are laid out on How to Get Certified. For how the credentials build on one another and how their eligibility timelines work together, see Certification Pathways. How to Get Certified. For how the credentials build on one another and how their eligibility timelines work together, see Certification Pathways.
One more thing: membership is separate
MAI membership is not required to start, hold, or renew the practitioner-ladder credentials above, MAFC through CMAO. CMGB is the exception: it requires active MAI membership. Outside of CMGB, if you'd like to be part of the professional community and have a voice in MAI standards, that's a separate track you can explore once you know where you're headed. Membership →
